GrapheneOS phone FAQ

Questions

1. What is GrapheneOS?

GrapheneOS is the most secure operating system for phones, it mainly does this by removing Google software that harvests your personal information.

It also contains several different security measures to protect your phone, some cool ones include a duress pin that wipes your phone's data when typed in. For a more detailed outline, see the GrapheneOS feature overview.

2. What do I give up by using GrapheneOS?

By swapping to GrapheneOS you do lose some conveniences that a normal operating system gives you. Keep in mind a GrapheneOS installation isn't permanent and can be reversed if you really do not like it, you can send it back to us or do it yourself. Here are some things that may be affected.

  • Banking Apps May Struggle to Work. Most bank apps seem to work for now "CommBank, NAB, Westpac, ANZ etc" however overseas banks such as some American banks may struggle to work properly with GrapheneOS. These are all subject to change.
  • Tap-to-pay does not work. Google Wallet tapping with a card will not work.
  • No Google Backup Setting the phone up is more hands-on than moving between two stock Android phones.

3. Why would I disconnect the camera?

By default GrapheneOS has a software switch that should turn the camera off, and so this isn't needed 99% of the time, but if you want to be completely sure or if you just want the camera module because it's cool to have, we can disconnect the camera.

4. What software comes installed?

Simplex:This is a great chatting application. You don't need a phone number like Signal just a username and password, make an account and link your friends to talk with one of the most private chatting services. MUCH better than Telegram which handed over user data (they were forced but still) to government authorities multiple times, and sweeps the floor in terms of privacy compared to Discord and WhatsApp which can essentially freely view user data whenever they want.

Mullvad VPN:This is probably the best VPN in the market as of writing, great pricing and extremely private and secure. A VPN when activated will hide your browsing activity to your ISP (Internet Service Provider) and your IP from the websites you browse, you can use this with Mullvad Browser to browse the internet mostly privately, DO NOT USE THIS VPN (or any VPN for that matter) when using the Tor browser, this has the opposite effect and makes you less secure and private.

Mullvad Browser:A great browser though might be a bit weird to get used to compared to other browsers, it has very similar security features to the Tor browser, such as fingerprinting resistance, this is the go-to browser if you just want to browse the internet, and access things like X, Google, Amazon whatever you want. It can cause some websites to not work properly in that case you can use the Brave Browser.

Brave Browser:Another good browser, this is a chromium based browser and thus will support chrome based plugins and is easier to use, it's not as secure as Mullvad Browser but is very convenient while still being much better and more secure than things like Google Chrome.

Tor Browser:The MOST secure browser you can use, you use this whenever you REALLY do not want anyone tracking what you're doing, this browser is used by journalists, government agencies, criminal syndicates, cults, and soon you! All jokes aside the browser is the BEST browser for browsing anonymously and is the only way to browse the Deep Web (.onion links) this part of the internet is unregulated and as such contains websites that can serve any number of different categories, due to the anonymity, a lot of websites may operate to scam you out of your crypto currency or are a federal honeypot operation to catch dumb criminals trying to buy from "Drugs2You" exercise caution and don't commit crimes please, every time someone gets caught it just adds more fuel to the fire that bans these technologies from normal citizens who care about their privacy.

6. Are the phones new?

Every phone is refurbished. They are sourced from companies that refurbish phones, if you want a new phone you can buy one and send it to us to upgrade it.
